Proposed development in the Wyoming Range’s Hoback Basin Action Alert
Hello Wyoming Wildlife Federation supporters,
The Wyoming Range needs your help! You may be aware that 136 natural gas wells have been proposed for the Upper Hoback River Basin located in the northern reaches of the Wyoming Range. The Bridger-Teton National Forest has recently opened this proposal up for initial comments and you have until Feb. 7th to share your concerns.
This development is proposed by a Houston-based company called Plains Exploration and Production Company, who has no experience drilling on National Forest lands. The proposed development includes:
136 wells on 17 pads with 29 miles of constructed or enhanced roads
road building and tree removal that will increase sediment levels in the Hoback River and nearby tributaries causing harm and possible death to native trout (like the cutthroat). In fact, this development proposed a well spitting distance away from the Hoback River!
impacting a wide range of wildlife – including elk (particularly the Muddy Creek herd), mule deer, moose, antelope, sage grouse, native trout and lynx
fragmenting migration corridors for big game
disturbance near birthing areas for elk, mule deer, and moose
disturbance in spring and summer ranges for elk, moose, mule deer, antelope and sage grouse
reduced hunting and recreation opportunities
Because the Bridger-Teton National Forest’s 1990 land use management plan is in the process of being revised, development plans should not be approved until they have comprehensive and current baseline data.
This is an area visited by many hunters, fishermen and women, and outdoor enthusiasts who work hard, who live in Wyoming for its beauty and wild places, and who need and want a place to experience quality habitat like that found in the Wyoming Range.
Your participation is an important step, so please refer to the following link on the Sportsmen for the Wyoming Range website for suggested scoping comments and additional information: http://wyomingrangesportsmen.org/page.php?D=ct_20060727185049&DP=c3ac33a91090e38611a7caac59e330b7. Also, a suggested article for your review: http://www.jacksonholenews.com/article.php?art_id=2688.
The more comments we generate, the better for the Wyoming Range and the opportunity for future generations to enjoy Wyoming’s wild places.
